A normal morning. Father and son go fishing. Dad feels bad, but doesn’t show it. He diligently teaches the boy – lets him drive a car, dig worms – do everything himself. The everyday mood changes when the boy gets his first fish. The transmission of life between generations can often be cruel and

Summary
In his first full-length feature film, Jaan Toomik deals with the same questions that have interested him throughout his career as an artist: themes of death and sexuality, bodily transformations, real and dream relationships, basic human fears, alienation from the world and oneself. A middle-aged man’s decent marriage has reached a dead end, he is torn between past and present relationships, not knowing what to do with them. Life on the border begins to overload the man’s nervous system, reality and the dream merge, it becomes more and more difficult to distinguish between what is real and what is fantasy. Toomik portrays a pre-madness explosive state where a person can no longer find the means to get in touch with life.

Communion

DIRECTOR and SCREENWRITER: Jaan Toomik
PRODUCER: Jaan Toomik
CAST: Alar Sudak, Maire Haas, Vahur Utna

2007 | Short film | Duration 12 min.

Summary
In the film, which carries the atmosphere of Toomik’s earlier video installations, where there is almost no dialogue, the main character was played by the artist’s long-time friend and (in a sense) alter ego Alar Sudak. The short film turned out to be a success: “The Eucharist” received a special jury prize at the 54th Oberhausen International Short Film Festival and in 2011 it was screened at the Pompidou Center in a program together with the films of Aleksander Sokurov, Zbigniew Rybczyński and Želimir Žilnik
